Overcast 10ยฐC and a 7 km/h NW Breeze Set Up a Soft Coho Flood
Calm 0.0m seas, overcast skies and a building flood have peak-run Coho and Chum stacked inshore on Discovery Passage.
Today's Conditions on Discovery Passage
We've got a classic fall fishing morning shaping up in Campbell River. The thermometer is sitting at 10ยฐC under an overcast sky, with a light NW wind drifting through at just 7 km/h. Wave height is basically flat at 0.0m, so the water is laying down nice and calm out on Discovery Passage. We're working the morning slack into the flood right now, and that transition is exactly the window you want to be on the water for this time of year. Soft light, calm seas, and a building tide are a recipe for aggressive fish.
Coho and Chum at Peak
The Coho run is firing on all cylinders. We're into fresh, chrome fish in the 10-to-15 lb class, and they are stacked up inshore right now. The overcast ceiling is a gift โ Coho tend to hold higher in the water column and feed harder when the sun isn't blazing down, so today's grey skies play right into our hands. Chum Salmon are backing them up in big numbers too, giving everyone aboard plenty of pulling power. When both species are at peak like this, the action rarely slows down for long.
Techniques That Are Working
With the fish holding inshore and the flood just getting going, we're running spoons in that 30-to-45 foot range and skating bucktails shallow for the Coho that are slashing near the surface. Green-glow finishes have been dependable in the low light. Keep your gear moving โ Coho love a faster troll, and that aggressive presentation triggers the reaction strikes. If you feel a Chum grab, hang on, because those fish fight dirty all the way to the net.
What to Expect This Week
If you can handle a bit of fall weather, this is some of the most spectacular fishing we see all season. Inshore spots along Discovery Passage and down toward Johnstone Strait are loaded, and the calm conditions make for a comfortable day on the water even when the air is cool. Dress in layers, bring your rain gear just in case, and come ready to bend a rod. The peak doesn't last forever, so now is the time to get out there.
Book Your Spot
