FSC Daily Fishing Report - Monday, June 22, 2026
A flat calm June morning on Discovery Passage delivered a 28-fish day for first-timers Jim and Tammy aboard this Campbell River fishing charter, headlined by a chrome-bright 17lb Chinook salmon.
Conditions Report: June 22, 2026
The morning came up clear and easy. By the time the Boston Whaler Montauk cleared the marina at six, the fog patches were already lifting and the sky had gone the deep blue of a proper June day. Air temp held at 22°C with a light northwest wind at 8 km/h, gusting to 12 but never building into anything. Visibility ran a clean 10 km. Sunrise at 5:11 AM had already laid soft light across the water by the time we set lines.
The sea cooperated. Discovery Passage ran flat calm, a metre or less, just a light ripple to break the surface. The marine forecast called northwest 10 to 20 knots, but inside the passage it never showed. Tides shaped the plan: low water at 7:41 AM gave way to a building flood toward the midday high, and at Seymour Narrows the current was honking at over 15 knots. We stayed south of the heavy water, working the flood as it pushed bait around the green can.
The Catch
The program was simple and it worked. We trolled hoochies — plastic squid lures — behind flashers, running the downriggers at 110 feet, holding around two and a half knots over ground. The water was a warm 16.4°C, and warm water means active fish.
It was Jim and Tammy's first time out, and the morning handed them plenty. Twenty-five fish came up and went back, and three came home — a healthy mix of Chinook and Coho. The fish of the day was a chrome-bright 17-pound Chinook. The rod buried, the drag sang, and Jim hung on with a grin he couldn't hide. The fish fought well. He was patient. It came up silver.
What's Running in June
June is a fine time to be on the water around Campbell River. Summer Chinook are here in good numbers, most running 12 to 16 pounds, with a real chance at a trophy fish pushing 30. Coho are beginning to mix in through the early summer. Under DFO Area 13 regulations, Chinook must be a minimum of 62cm to retain, and we fish within those rules every trip — releasing the bigger fish to keep the run strong. Warm water and a building flood tide are a reliable recipe this time of year.
