FSC Daily Fishing Report - Sunday, June 28, 2026

A 92-year-old's first day on the water and a chrome 16 lb Chinook made for a memorable Campbell River fishing charter on Discovery Passage. Chinook and Coho came through on hoochies down at 230 feet.

Conditions Report: June 28, 2026

Summer settled bright over Discovery Passage today. Air temp held at 13°C under scattered clouds and clean 10 km visibility. The wind came WNW at 15 km/h and gusted to 32, so we worked the lee where the water laid down soft.

The marine forecast called northwest 30 knots through Johnstone Strait with seas 1 metre or less. In the main channel we found light chop and blue-green water — fishable and comfortable. The tide built toward a 12.7 ft high at 6:36 PM, with slack before ebb at Seymour Narrows at 6:04 PM. Seymour itself was running 13.6 knots on the ebb, so we kept clear of the narrows and fished the passage on the softening water.

The Catch

The method was simple and proven: trolling hoochies behind flashers, downriggers set deep at 230 feet, holding around 2.5 knots. Water temp read a warm 17.0°C, and the fish were active for it. A Full Moon at 99% put the solunar rating at Excellent, and our best action lined up with the evening feeding window as the tide turned.

We moved twenty fish through the boat. Three kept, seventeen released to keep the run strong. The best was a chrome-bright 16 lb Chinook, thick and silver. Coho came through too. But the real story sat in the boat with us: Greg brought his 92-year-old dad, Gerald, out from Indonesia for their first day ever on the water. The look on their faces was worth more than any fish.

What's Running in June

Summer Chinook are the bread and butter here, typically 12-16 lbs with a real chance at a trophy pushing 30 or more. Coho are starting to show as the season builds. In DFO Area 13, Chinook must be a minimum 62cm to retain, and over the coming weeks the slot limit comes into effect — so releasing the big ones to keep the run strong is part of how we fish. Warm water means active fish, and the long summer evenings give us those magic golden-hour bites.
