Winter Chinook Fishing in Campbell River: Why February Is the Best-Kept Secret

While most anglers wait for summer, February delivers some of the best Chinook fishing of the year in Campbell River. Chrome-bright feeders, uncrowded waters, and dramatic winter scenery make this the perfect time to book a guided charter.

Anglers celebrating a winter Chinook catch in Campbell River

When people think of salmon fishing in Campbell River, they picture sun-drenched summer mornings and packed boats on Discovery Passage. But the locals know something the tourists don't: February is one of the best months to fish.

Why Winter Chinook?

Winter Chinook — also called feeders or residents — are ocean-bright salmon that stay in local waters year-round instead of migrating upriver. They're aggressive, chrome-bright, and fight hard in the cold, clear water of Discovery Passage.

Unlike summer, when dozens of boats crowd the hot spots, winter fishing means you often have the water to yourself. It's just you, your guide, and the fish.

What to Expect on a February Charter

A typical winter charter starts at first light. You'll head out from K Dock at Discovery Harbour Marina into Discovery Passage, where the underwater terrain creates perfect feeding lanes for resident Chinook.

Your guide will set up downriggers at 80 to 120 feet, trolling cut-plug herring or hootchies through the deep channels where winter fish hold. When a Chinook hits at that depth, you feel it — a heavy, pulsing pull that sends the rod tip hammering.

Water temperatures sit around 8°C this time of year, and the fish are healthy and well-fed. Expect Chinook in the 8 to 15 pound range, with the occasional surprise in the low 20s.

Best Months for Each Species

Species Peak Season Best Technique
Chinook (Winter) November – March Downrigger trolling, 80-120ft
Chinook (Summer) May – September Downrigger trolling, 40-80ft
Coho July – October Bucktailing, surface trolling
Pink Salmon July – August Light tackle, near-surface
